Abstract: This past Saturday evening I had the opportunity to watch a documentary called Into Great Silence by Philip Groning. It was basically a filming of monastic life.

The film took almost three hours of monks doing what they do, chores and praying. I was kidding myself thinking I've had more fun watching paint dry. :-)

Somehow, I made it all the way through without moving out of my seat. If you discount my chin bouncing off my chest during an occasional catnap, I did pretty well. Maybe I was unconsciously praying?

I'm not writing to encourage you to live the life of a monk, but living a more disciplined life is worth considering. A couple of days after the viewing I got a message. The message was, "If you're not disciplined, you will be."

This really hit me. If you don't readily get it, here's the meaning. If you are not disciplined in your life, life will find a way to discipline you. This is not some harsh punishment sent down by a mean and vengeful God. This is just natural law at work.

The very things we resist most can be our greatest teachers and most freeing experiences.

So what have you been thinking about doing as a discipline or what did you used to do that you've gotten away from that was very beneficial to you? There are many possibilities, not just prayer or meditation. Maybe it's makng your bed, going for a walk (outdoors or on the treadmill), or cleaning up after yourself (guys).

Let's turn discipline into a positive rather than think of it as punishment.
